It depends on the wrapper. For QuickTime–wrapped DNxHD you just need to download Avid codecs. For MXF-wrapped get Calibrated[Q] software. It will allow you to play MXF in QT Player and it will give you QuickLook preview. There is also MXF4Mac from Hamburg Pro Media.

I have had success with VLC.  You might want to check that out as an option.

VLC doesn't work for Alexa's MXF.
Have now the MXF4Mac and it does well... paid 500euros, download plug in from avid and Hamburg Pro Media and... YESSS!

Thank you for your help.

You're right it doesn't work with  the Alexa MXFs.  It seemed to work with the test material I tried.  Weird.

MXF "standard" has a long list of Operating Patterns. The most simple is OP-Atom and that's Avid–native. Alexa's MXF is OP-1a I think which is somewhat extended spec.

Easiest way to view ALexa MXF is via a QT-component, that enables Quicktime to read these files (or edit in FPC, Premiere).
Have a look at our whitepaper: http://bit.ly/NxEvBT

The whitepaper states that until DaVinci Resolve 8.2 is released there is no free player for the DNxHD content from the Alexa. I have not gotten to play with an Alexa that has the firmware update for DNxHD but since Resolve 8.2 is here and 9.0 is just around the corner I assume that it can view these files just fine?

EDIT: with the avid codec pack of course.
