With an Alexa, if you took the same exact scene with a 50mm Ultra Prime & then used a 50mm Master Prime,
say both at T1.9, same ND filters, etc. - would there be a noticeable image difference?
I have heard that there is better contrast using the Master Primes.
I have also heard the Master Primes are really more sensitive on the focus pulling, etc.
We only have Ultra Primes, so no way to compare.
Would appreciate any feedback posts, examples...thanks!

In short, slight, if any. The real benefit of Master Prime lenses is low light shooting, especially with the Alexa. It's scary how little light is needed with Master Prime lenses. This has been debated endlessly on the internet and there will always be people that will disagree with me.

MasterPrimes have better contrast and are sharper across the entire field of the lens. Also Master Primes are designed to not breath.

I haven't done any substantive tests between the two. I would leave that answer to someone who has.

Again, slight, if any noticeable difference between the two lenses. You will see a slight improvement with bokeh.

Does the Master Prime's aperture blades effect bokeh differently than the Ultra Prime's aperture blades?

Resolution/contrast comparison tests have been done between MPs and UPs on lens projectors and MTF benches. From 32mm and wider MP's are visibly better, especially off-center.
At 50mm and up the differences are negligible. That of course for both lenses at their resepective biggest apertures.

Are you essentially saying on Master Primes vs. Ultra Primes for contrast with 50mm and up are about the same at T1.9?

if one can afford master primes in production he should definitely afford thorough testing. The Lens projector shows resolution, just one characteristic. it is impossible to know how the lens will behave in all image aspects on specific scene types from that. to me the need for T1.3 is rare with asa800. some will prefer cookes with alexa. test, test, test...

UP's are still and will always be a great investment. They are great lenses, full stop. I'm confident that you won't be disappointed with them.

It is pretty amazing on the movie King's Speech, when they are racking focus with the Master Primes, there is no breathing.
It is easy to take it for granted and not even notice because the optics are perfect.
