I have been asked by my bosses to find an option to utilize an Apple Cinema Display as a "Client Monitor" with an Arri Alexa or Alexa M tethered to the other end using a Blackmagic Design HDLink Pro DVI. My question is: Have you or any of you guys used or heard of this setup?

Sean,

We use the HD link Pro with an Eizo and Cinema display (23in) monitors and it works great.

Sean,

if you want more control of the displayed image you can the LiveGrade software with the HDLink device: http://pomfort.com/livegrade/

You can for example use the HDLink device to output a Log-C image as Rec.709, apply an existing Alexa Look or LUT, or even modify the look interactively.

If you are using a Cinema Display instead of an SDI monitor, it might be interesting for you to use an ICC profile for that monitor to get closer to Rec.709. You can find more info how that works with HDLink and LiveGrade here: http://kb.pomfort.com/?p=373

Best,
Patrick

Sorry for the late responses, but thank you very much!  The DIT for the particular job had another solution, albeit not the most effective, it still worked.

Just a note - I've been using the X-Rite i1Profiler system with the Cinema Display monitor I am using.  This calibrating system does wonders for the color and contrast settings on the display.  I find the images coming from camera look very much like how I expect them.

The Apple Cinema 27" display (non-Thunderbolt) does not work with the Blackmagic HD Link Pro 3D.

I bought the Blackmagic HD Link Pro 3D, i1 Display Pro, and a Apple Cinema 27" display (non-Thunderbolt). Almost bought LiveGrade to use with this combination. But when the display refused to with with the Blackmagic, I gave up.

Has anyone successfully used this combination?

MacPro
   |
Blackmagic HD Extreme 3D PCIe card
   |
HD-SDI cable
   |
Blackmagic HD Link Pro 3D
   |
DisplayPort to mini-Display Port (Female) adapter cable
   |
Apple Cinema 27" display (non-Thunderbolt)

I tried with the above config.

Other DisplayPort monitors like one from Benq work fine. But the Cinema display stays blank.
