Gentlemen,
Is there anything like a "Red Rocket" for ArriRaw? We're thinking of 48fps ArriRaw in 3D but we're not sure if our team can handle the workflow.

The fastest system I have found for Arri RAW workflow is the SGO Mistika - real-time Arri Raw capability, including colour correction, effects, etc...
Also just happens to be the system being used for The Hobbit's 48fps Stereo 3D workflow.

Resolve Lite ($free) can color and playback Arriraw. I've found that with my new Nvidia Quadro 4000 I can playback Arriraw at 24FPS on my Quad Core MacPro. Very cool.

I've only been using 1 color correction node to apply the loc C to 709 LUT.with the paid version of resolve, you are not restricted to one GPU, with an expansion chassis, you could add 3 more GPU's for better performance.

The key thing for Arriraw isn't the ability of the given program and corresponding Graphics card but the storage speed. Arriraw requires a minimum of a 4 drive RAID0 in order to be read in 24fps realtime. If you were to scale for 3D I wouldn't use anyting less then a SAS connected 8bay RAID. Transcodes is a whole other issue.
The best program I've used for playing back Arriraw is Colorfront because it uses a 6GB Nvidia Tesla card wth Codex direct support.

$15K isn't much for how long? 2 weeks? To many variables. Are you downloading/Dailies? Color only?
Sounds like your renting everything but the MacPro and storage.
On most Codex shows the Post House is heavily involved.
I bring a Trulight, 25' OLED, Leader in addition to my Data Set-up. I always ask to do a single download if not 3 before I hand-off a Codex datapack.

Good News.... ASUS and EVGA are releasing beside of supermicro their new dual socket motherboards. The asus z9pe-d8-ws board has two 2011 sockets, quad channel RAM, and 7 !!!! PCIe 3.0 lanes, 4 of that with 16x and 3 with 8x. http://vr-zone.com/articles/asus-s-dual-socket-2011-workstation-motherboard--z9pe-d8-ws/14488.htmlplus it has onboard USB3.0 and eSATA connectivity as a bunch of internal SATA connectivity with RAID controller. so you don't need extra cards to connect your external drives with full speed and can built a fine internal RAID, so it will easy playback and store ARRIRAW as well. With the SLI support you are also able to place there up to 3 nvidia render GPUs for resolve for example (think of the power of three TESLA cards)... We will test a similar configuration with the current 1366 dual socket board of supermicro which you can equip with the current 55/56 XEON processors. When we are ready with that I will let you more on this. Because of the current limitations to the MacPro boards (only 4 PCI lanes and costs, shitty nvidia support, no USB3.0 etc.) and the upcoming release of the windows resolve version we are thinking loud of leaving the apple platform as the alexa will shortly support recording the 444 DNxHD Avid codec. The EVGA follower of the SR-2 board the new SR-X board has similar specs..... If you have an interest on such a machine please let me know.... best, rainer |
