Thats encouraging to hear Michael.
I must applaud the team for the EV to EV+ upgrade process, it has been a really great experience on all or cameras. Very trouble free and with a very swift turnaround. Both important things in this business, and something not all suppliers get right....

We would love to be able to upgrade our EV/EV+ cameras to full 4:3 recording. If anamorphics will blossom once again (The new Zeiss x2.0 anamorphics signals that something is brewing) having the Alexa Studio as A Cam and an Alexa EV+ as B Cam would be a great option. I can't see anyone using the Alexa M as a standard B cam with the "Weird" form factor besides using it for special mounting situations and 3D stereo rigs.

Given that the Alexa Plus can process 4.67 megapixels in 1.78:1 (2880x1620), is there any reason it couldn't process the same resolution raster in 1.33:1, i.e. 2495x1871 rather than the current raster of 1936x1620?

This would then be a sensor size of 20.5 x 15.4mm, much closer to Modern Anamorphic (22 x 18.6mm).

This small difference in field of view would make the Alexa Plus more feasible for anamorphic, paticularly given the availability of the widest anamorphic focal lengths.

Just wondering...

What is the Max. framerate on the Studio when in full sensor height anamorphic mode? Still 120 fps?

@ Anders Holck Max fps with mirror shutter running will probably be 60.

@rjdbradburry: We do understand the benefit of a taller aspect ratio, but it's not as easy as switching the sensor readout and image processing to a different raster. As Marc said, there are technical obstacles that make it unlikely to be possible anytime soon.

Has ARRI considered taking payment along with trade-ins of the Alexa EV & EV+ for the Alexa Studio or M?
Some kind of a replacement upgrade program?

Rob,

We never had any program to buy back cameras and honestly, we'll never be in this business.
Some people called us up and wanted to trade in their 20 year old film camera...

There are some third party companies that do just that - buying and selling used equipment.
The price for the ALEXA Studio is still about double and aims at top DP's who are used to using an optical VF.
The ALEXA M is more of a specialty camera.

The only reason I asked this is because I read something about upgrades for D-21 customers.

I think the biggest interest will be in having the 4:3 sensor with the new Zeiss Anamorphic Lenses coming out.

in 4:3 mode, the max frame rate is 48fps.

Got it. Thanks.

So basically the limits currently are:

Mirror shutter:
4:3 - 48 fps
16:9 - 60 fps

Electronic shutter:
4:3 - 48 fps
16:9 - 120 fps (with higspeed license)

With regards to combining the EVF with 4:3 mode, will there be an option to have an optical desqueese eyepiece, as compared to simply letterboxing the finder image.?

Also what are the Prores/DNX image sizes when shooting anamorphic - 1920x1440?

(I'm sorry if I derail this thread, as it is about 4:3 mode on the EV/EV+)

The optical VF on the Studio has a build in de-squeeze module that can be switched from regular to 2:1 stretch. There is also an optional 1.3x stretch module available.

There will be a ProRes format in a 4:3 aspect ratio in a future SUP.
Not sure yet about DnX in 4:3
We have to see if AVID supports it.

@Anders,

re:  With regards to combining the EVF with 4:3 mode, will there be an option to have an optical desqueese eyepiece, as compared to simply letterboxing the finder image.?

We are not planning on developing an eyepiece for the evf that provides for an optical desqueeze.  You will have to letterbox the finder image.
