DP w/ Alexa and Ultra Primes.

« on: November 10, 2011, 07:45:12 AM »

I am looking for advice on a new large on-set monitor.  I'd like something in the 24"-36" range.  Must be 1080 resolution.  My current 17" Panasonic is noisy and very green.  I want something that will show off how good the Alexa looks.

Thanks.

The 25-inch Sony BVM-E250. It's an OLED monitor and has real blacks making it a terrific evaluation monitor, and with the REC709 setting, a great master monitor for your clients.

BVM-E250 list price is $26,000
Are there other monitors that are similar in quality
for less money?

I thought you were renting. The Sony LMD-2451W 24" is also good. Around $6k USD.

Is this for your secondary display? Why not just use an HDSI to HDMI converter box and a nice TV? Do you really need the Rec 709 function, histograms, and other fancy monitoring features? Only we (DP, colorist) can tell the difference.

Rainer with the JVC sounds good! Is the color on it precise?
The new model is: JVC DT-R24L41DU

For the Alexa
MON OUT: 1920x1080 4:2:2 YUV
REC OUT 1 : 1920x1080 4:4:4 RGB

Both can be used for monitoring if you are recording to SxS

Impressive playback from the Alexa on set - should be fantastic?
especially with 5.0 SUP to be able to playback LogC with custom LUT applied.

For color grading and realtime viewing with a blackmagicdesign or AJA device for playback
would the JVC DT-R24L41DU be more than enough?

I would have to say that the new Sony PVM1741 or PVM2541 which are both OLED monitors look like the best bang for your buck at the moment, at $4100 & $6100 USD they seem pretty well priced.
The differences between the PVM and BVM are They don't have dual link inputs and 10 bit Vs 12 bit panel and no ability to load a LUT into the monitor. I like the BVM range which is clearly better but is it $20K better?
At least your getting a piece of that awesome OLED tech and maybe get a HDLink Pro and you then have the LUT and Dual Link issues taken care of as well.

Do remember that regardless of the actual monitor/display being able to verify and alter calibration is key to an accurate image.

Using a 'cheaper' display, without all the bells and whistles, but with a LUT box (HDlink Pro has been mentioned, which is fine, as is Pluto or Davio), and a good calibration system (I would obviously recommend LightSpace CMS, but other are available) with a probe (i1 Display Pro is not the most common and low-cost) you can get very accurate monitoring without breaking the bank.

Hope this helps.

If you want sexy I recommend using the Sony OLED PVM-2541, which is the baby brother of the E250 OLED Monitor. I'm currently using it as a Color-Critical Monitor on my various Projects.

Side Note: The monitor does revert to a 48hz frequency when 23.98 PSF signal is viewed much like the CRT monitors used to exhibit. I also heard a rumor of a firmware upgrade to solve that:) All 23.98"p", 25, 29.97 are normal.

My Commercial DIT cart has the Flanders Scientific 2461w which is a 24" LCD Monitor.

best,

Dane,

Does the Flanders Scientific show off the quality of the Alexa?  The Sony sounds nice, but I work in a smaller market and it would be hard to get clients to spring for the rental.

Nice pic of the Leica Tri-Elmar!

Chris,
The Flanders is a great monitor. I use it on my DIT cart as well and it is the best bang for the buck.
Are there better?...Yes. Does it show off a great image?... Absolutely.
Flanders also has great customer service if you ever need it, and they continuously try to upgrade and add as many User requested options as possible.
ie. Some friends of mine just recently suggested a custom scale setting for Codex viewing full-screen. They had a Beta version to them the next day!

I'll third the new Sony PVM-2541. It's definately the best looking display for the price. But do keep in mind it's flicker and burn-in issues...
